ABSTRACT

The novel coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 is a highly contagious disease that has rapidly spread throughout the world. In addition to respiratory complications, the virus has also been linked to damage other organ systems as well as coagulopathy. The features and clinical spectrum of COVID-19 are continually emerging, with growing evidence of its connection to thrombosis in various systems. In this case report, the authors present a case of COVID-19 infection in a young male patient who had superior mesenteric artery thrombosis with pneumatosis intestinalis complicated by hepatic portal venous gas.

ABSTRACT

Objective: COVID19 is associated with vascular inflammation. IFN-alpha (IFNa) and IFN-lambda3 (IFNl3) are potent cytokines produced in viral infections. Their effects involve interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) and may influence expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), the receptor for S-protein (S1P) of SARS-CoV-2. We hypothesized that S1P-induced immune/inflammatory responses in endothelial cells (EC) are mediated via IFN-activated pathways Design and methods: Human ECs were stimulated with S1P (1 mg/mL), IFNa (100ng/mL) or IFNl3 (100IU/mL). Because ACE2, ADAM17 and TMPRSS2 are important for SARS-CoV-2 infection, we used inhibitors of ADAM17 (marimastat, 3.8 nM), ACE2 (MLN4760, 440pM), and TMPRSS2 (camostat, 50 mM). Gene and protein expression was investigated by real-time PCR and immunoblotting, respectively. Vascular function was assessed in mesenteric arteries from wild-type (WT) normotensive and hypertensive (LinA3) mice and in ISG15-deficient (ISG15KO) mice. Results: S1P increased expression of IFNa (3-fold), IFNl3 (4-fold) and ISGs (2-fold) in EC (p < 0.05). EC responses to IFNa (ISG15: 16-fold) were greater than to IFNl3 (ISG15: 1.7-fold) (p < 0.05). S1P increased gene expression of IL-6 (1.3-fold), TNFa (6.2-fold) and IL-1b (3.3-fold), effects that were amplified by IFNs. Only the ADAM17 inhibitor marimastat inhibited S1P effects. IFNa and IFNl3 increase protein expression of ADAM17 (27%) and TMPRSS2 (38%). No changes were observed on ACE2 expression. This was associated with increased phosphorylation of Stat1 (134%), Stat2 (102%), ERK1/2 (42%). EC production of IL-6 was increased by IFNa (1,230pg/mL) and IFNl3 (1,124pg/mL) vs control (591pg/mL). Nitric oxide generation and eNOS phosphorylation (Ser1177) were reduced by IFNa (40%) and IFNl3 (40%). Vascular functional responses demonstrated that endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation (% Emax) in vessels from WT-mice stimulated with IFNa (67%) and IFNl3 (71%) were reduced vs control (82%) (p < 0.05). Responses were not altered in vessels from ISG15KO mice. Increased contraction was observed only in vessels from hypertensive mice treated with IFNa (9.1 ± 0.5mN vs control: 7.3 ± 0.3mN) (p < 0.05). Conclusions: In ECs, S1P, IFNa and IFNl3 increased ISG15 and IL-6 by mechanisms dependent on ADAM17. IFNs amplifies endothelial cell inflammatory responses and induced vascular dysfunction through ISG15-dependent mechanisms, with augmented effects in hypertension. Our findings demonstrate that S1P induces immune/inflammatory responses that may be important in endotheliitis associated with COVID-19. This may be especially important in the presence of cardiovascular risk factors, including hypertension.

ABSTRACT

Background: Spontaneous peripheral dissections are rare, and in a substantial number of cases, the underlying aetiology remains unclear. Patients and methods: We report the case of a 63-year-old male patient with a recent asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection who presented with sudden-onset intermittent abdominal pain. Imaging studies revealed a dissection of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) and large-vessel vasculitis involving the SMA as well as the carotid, subclavian, axillary and femoropopliteal arteries. In the absence of other predisposing factors, we supposed an association with prior COVID-19 and performed a systematic review of the literature to search for similar cases with arterial dissection related to acute or recent SARS-CoV-2 infection. Results: We identified 25 cases, including ours: 13 males and 12 females, with a median age of 48 years. In 22/25 patients, arterial dissection occurred within 4 weeks after the diagnosis of COVID-19 and involved the cerebral (11/25; 44%), coronary (10/25; 40%), splanchnic (3/25; 12%) and renal (2/25; 8%) arteries. Conclusions: Although initially known for its respiratory manifestations, it has become evident that SARS-CoV-2 not only infects pneumocytes but also enters the vascular endothelium, leading to endothelial dysfunction and hypercoagulability and - as shown in our case - large-vessel vasculitis, which may predispose patients to intramural haemorrhage and arterial dissection.

ABSTRACT

Background: Disseminated infections such as tuberculosis are known to result in a systemic inflammatory response leading to thrombosis, with increasing reported cases of thrombotic event being observed in patients infected with covid-19. This is the first reported case on co-infection with COVID-19 pneumonia and disseminated tuberculosis causing catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome (CAPS). Method(s): The report highlighted the challenges in the diagnosis and management which include the use of corticosteroid in setting of systemic infections. Another diagnostic dilemma was to explain the cause of myositis by tuberculous or autoimmune. Case Presentation: We report a 26-year- old man with HbE trait thalassemia who reported unintentional weight loss, night sweats for 1 month prior to the diagnosis of covid-19 infection on 10th March 2022. Seven days later, he was hospitalized for suspected perforated appendix. Computed tomography (CT) abdomen revealed hepatosplenomegaly, prostatitis, seminal vesiculitis. Multiple matted abdominal lymph nodes were not amenable for biopsy. Soon, he appeared toxic, dyspneic required non-invasive ventilation with bilateral parotitis. He had raised erythrocyte sedimentation (ESR) 52 mm/hour, C-reactive protein (CRP) 221 mg/dl, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) 730U/L. Direct Coomb's antibody was positive but did not have any form of haemolysis. Complement 3 (0.45 g/L) and complement 4 (0.1 g/L) levels were low. Serum IgG4, procalcitonin, anti-nuclear antibody, cultures and virology were negative. Sputum for acid fast bacilli (AFB) was positive on Auramine O stain but the Ziehl-Nelson (ZN) stain and tuberculous PCR (GeneXpert) were negative. Diagnosis of disseminated tuberculosis was made but his abdominal pain persisted despite being on anti-tuberculous therapy (ATT), and he had new evidence of splenic infarct. CT angiogram also revealed celiac trunk and superior mesenteric artery thrombosis. Antiphospholipid (aPL) test was positive for lupus anticoagulant, beta 2 glycoprotein 1 and anti-cardiolipin antibodies. Therapeutic anticoagulation and plasma exchange were initiated for probable CAPS followed by intravenous immunoglobulin and corticosteroid. Thereafter, the patient developed severe bilateral pelvic girdle pain with evidence of myositis on the MRI (Figure 2). Serum creatine kinase was never elevated. Anti-PL- 7 and anti Ro-52 were borderline elevated. He recovered well and ambulant before discharged home. Conclusion(s): Our case highlight the complexicity of presentation of CAPS who manifested as multiple arterial thrombosis. The diagnosis of disseminated tuberculosis relied strongly on microbiological, imaging and clinical presentation as histopathological evidence was not feasible. Management challenges were deciding on corticosteroid in disseminated infection and the need for confirmation of persistent positive aPL test and to monitor myositis symptom to help guide decision making. ABSTRACT

COVID-19 has significantly affected public health, social life, and economies worldwide. The only effective way to combat the pandemic is through vaccines. Although the vaccines have been in use for some time, safety concerns have still been raised. The most typical adverse effects of receiving a COVID-19 vaccine are localized reactions near the injection site, followed by general physical symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, muscle pain, and fever. Additionally, some people may experience VITT (vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia), a rare side effect after vaccination. We present the case of a 60-year-old female patient that developed VITT-like symptoms with spleno-portal thrombosis and intestinal ischemia two weeks after the administration of the Ad26.COV2-S vaccine. Surgical treatment consisted of extensive bowel resection with end jejunostomy and feeding ileostomy. Two weeks after the first operation, a duodenal-ileal anastomosis was performed. The patient was discharged five weeks after the onset of the symptoms. Although some rare adverse effects are associated with the SARS-CoV-2 vaccines, the risk of hospitalization from these harmful effects is lower than the risk of hospitalization from COVID-19. Therefore, recognizing VITT is significant for ensuring the early treatment of clots and proper follow-up.

Introduction: Aortic aneurysmal disease is an evolving pathology: when treating an aortic aneurysm, we must consider the possibility of a thoraco-abdominal evolution aneurysm, which might lead to further treatments. In case of challenging anatomies (narrow aortic lumen at the level of visceral arteries, aortic wall thrombus, true lumen in an aortic dissected aneurysm, and focal aortic narrow diameter), unfavourable both for fenestrated endovascular aneurysm repair (FEVAR) and branched endovascular aneurysm repair (BEVAR), an inner branched custom made device could represent a potential feasible solution. Inner branched endografts have a typical configuration that combines the advantageous characteristics of both fenestrated and side branched endografts, thus showing advantages over other custom made grafts. Our study aimed to investigate the potential role of this technique in a broad variety of aortic anatomies unfavourable for FEVAR and BEVAR, in patients who received different previous aortic treatments. Methods: In our institution, between July 2018 and July 2020, 20 consecutive patients underwent a FEVAR/BEVAR procedure to treat complex abdominal aortic aneurysm or thoracic aortic aneurysm. Nine patients who were deemed untreatable with a fenestrated/branched graft due to aortic anatomy and/or previous treatments were treated with a custom made, four inner branch E-xtra design endograft (I BEVAR). All patients were treated for a complex aortic abdominal and thoraco-abdominal aneurysm: two patients were previously treated with frozen elephant trunk and TEVAR;three patients were previously treated with TEVAR;and one with TEVAR + abdominal aortic surgical treatment. Two patients received abdominal aortic surgical treatment only. The last patient was previously treated with EVAR, which was then complicated with a type 1A endoleak (EL). Five of six TEVARs were placed before BEVAR as staged procedures, to decrease spinal cord ischaemia risk. All patients had a lumbar cerebrospinal fluid drainage during the BEVAR procedure. In total, the bridging stents placed included 43 balloon expandable and four self-expandable stents. Results: In our experience, all cases were treated with a four inner branch endograft with a total revascularisation of 36 target vessels. Technical success was achieved in all nine cases (100%), with precise deployment of the inner branched endograft and effective engagement and bridging of all branches. Major clinical complications occurred in three (33%) patients: one case of continuous veno-venous haemofiltration treatment for a transient acute renal failure in a chronic renal disease;one case of hepatic decompensation in patient with a chronic cirrhosis, which led to liver failure (Child Pugh C10, MELD 19, still under medical treatment);and one patient with a pulmonary infection disease (COVID-19 related), which then resolved. No patient suffered spinal cord ischaemia. The mean follow up was 12.8 months ± 6.79 months, with an estimated one year survival rate of 89%. One patient with a thrombophilic disorder died on postoperative day 48 as a result of multiple organ failure after acute four inner branches simultaneous occlusion. During follow up, the target vessel primary patency rate was 89%, associated with four (11%) bridging stent ELs. At 30 days, computed tomography angiography detected five BS ELs in four patients: one type III BS EL (2.7%), and four type I BS ELs (11%). Re-intervention was needed in one patient (11%) with a type III and I BS EL associated with an aneurysm sac enlargement treated with bridging stent relining in the left renal artery and superior mesenteric artery. Conclusion: Our experience shows the feasibility of treating complex aortic anatomies with an inner branched graft in patients which were anatomically unfit for FEVAR/BEVAR treatment, allowing complex visceral vessels recanalisation and an adequate sealing. When a re-intervention is needed, we have to consider that previous surgical and endovascular treatments modify the aortic anatomy, and the graft deploy ent may be tougher, with a higher risk of malrotation. Inner branched endograft could be a valid option in case of complex anatomies, but long term follow up is needed.

ABSTRACT

Although coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was initially considered to be a respiratory disease, over time it started to be acknowledged as a multisystemic disease. One of the reasons for this multiorgan involvement is an increased risk of thrombosis. We aimed to present the development of superior mesenteric artery (SMA) thrombosis in a 79-year-old patient with COVID-19. Due to the increase in abdominal pain during the follow-up direct radiography and ultrasonography were repeated, and abdominal computed tomography (CT) was also undertaken. In the CT examination, SMA was observed to be occluded starting from the middle portion. SMA thrombosis is important because it can be fatal and its symptoms can be confused with those of COVID-19. The possibility of this condition should be considered in the presence of abdominal pain, especially in COVID-19 patients with risk factors in order not to delay diagnosis and treatment.

Gene and protein expression was investigated by real-time PCR immunoblotting, respectively. Vascular function was assessed in mesenteric arteries from wild-type (WT) normotensive and hypertensive mice and in ISG15-deficient (ISG15KO) mice. Results: EC stimulated with S1P increased expression of IFNα (3-fold), IFNL3 (4-fold) and ISG (2-fold)(p < 0.05). EC exhibited higher responses to IFNα (ISG15: 16-fold) than to IFNL3 (ISG15: 1.7-fold)(p < 0.05). S1P increased gene expression of IL-6 (1.3-fold), TNFα (6.2-fold) and IL-1β (3.3-fold), effects that were maximized by IFNs. Only marimastat inhibited S1P effects. IL-6 was increased by IFNα (1,230pg/mL) and IFNL3 (1,124pg/mL) vs control (591pg/ mL). This was associated with increased phosphorylation of Stat1 (134%), Stat2 (102%), ERK1/2 (42%). ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly increased the prevalence of psychiatric disorders within pediatric populations. However, only a limited number of studies have sought to understand the correlation between the pandemic and increased incidence of eating disorders. This case study highlights the hospital course of an 18-year-old female who presented with restrictive eating patterns and intensive exercise regimen, self-attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to superior mesenteric artery syndrome. In understanding the patient's avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), this case study seeks to inform readers of this newer DSM-V diagnosis with the intent of educating pediatric providers of the severity and long-term impact of this disease. Moreover, the case study highlights the importance of gaining a more holistic view of psychiatric disorders emerging as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT

We herein report a rare case of mycotic aneurysm of the superior mesenteric artery caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae. A 66-year-old man, a known case of hypertension and aorto-oesophageal fistula with stented aorta in 2010 and 2018, presented to the emergency department multiple times over 2 months with severe postprandial abdominal pain associated with vomiting and fever. On his last presentation, the obtained blood cultures grew ESBL positive K. pneumoniae and a repeated computed tomography (CT) showed a growing aneurysm at the origin of the ileocecal branch of the superior mesenteric artery measuring 17 × 10 mm (the aneurysm was 8 × 7.5 mm in the CT angiography on the previous admission). Extensive workup did not reveal the underlying cause of the mycotic aneurysm, thus we believe the cause to be the infected aortic stent, leading to bacteraemia and vegetations to the mesenteric artery causing the aneurysm. The management plan was placed by a multidisciplinary team consisting of vascular surgeons and infectious disease specialists along with review from a dietician to evaluate the patient's nutritional status. The patient was started on total parenteral nutrition due to his postprandial pain and on antibiotic therapy according to the infectious disease team's recommendation. He underwent surgical resection of the mycotic aneurysm, which showed a thrombosed aneurysm in the jejunoileal mesenteric area. The histopathology of the resected tissue demonstrated inflammatory aneurysm of the mesenteric artery. Following the surgery, the patient continued his antibiotic therapy and was discharged on the 13th post-operative day with follow-up appointments in the vascular surgery and infectious disease clinic.

ABSTRACT

Newer evidence states that COVID-19 pneumonia induces a hypercoagulable state leading to vascular and microvascular thrombotic events. Acute mesenteric ischaemia (AMI) is a potentially fatal vascular emergency with overall mortality of 60%-80%.However, till date, only a few cases of superior mesenteric artery thrombosis in COVID-19 positive patients are reported and most have succumbed to COVID-19 or mesenteric ischemia. Physicians treating COVID-19 usually treat respiratory symptoms and may completely overlook any other uncommon pathology. This case report emphasizes that a patient with early detection and management of acute mesenteric ischaemia being symptomatic for COVID-19 can avoid major bowel surgery and negates any morbidity or mortality associated with the same.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The novel 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19), which is caused by infection with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, has spread rapidly around the world and has caused many deaths. COVID-19 involves a systemic hypercoagulable state and arterial/venous thrombosis which induces unfavorable prognosis. Herein, we present a first case in East Asia where an acute superior mesenteric artery (SMA) occlusion associated with COVID-19 pneumonia was successfully treated by surgical intervention. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old man presented to his local physician with a 3-day history of cough and diarrhea. A real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction test showed positive for COVID-19, and he was admitted to the source hospital with the diagnosis of moderate COVID-19 pneumonia. Eight days later, acute onset of severe abdominal pain appeared with worsening respiratory condition. Contrast CT showed that bilateral lower lobe/middle lobe and lingula ground glass opacification with distribution suggestive of COVID-19 pneumonia and right renal infarction. In addition, it demonstrated SMA occlusion with intestinal ischemia suggesting extensive necrosis from the jejunum to the transverse colon. The patient underwent an emergency exploratory laparotomy with implementing institutional COVID-19 precaution guideline. Upon exploration, the intestine from jejunum at 100 cm from Treitz ligament to middle of transverse colon appeared necrotic. Necrotic bowel resection was performed with constructing jejunostomy and transverse colon mucous fistula. We performed second surgery to close the jejunostomy and transverse colon mucous fistula with end-to-end anastomosis on postoperative day 22. The postoperative course was uneventful and he moved to another hospital for rehabilitation to improve activities of daily living (ADLs) on postoperative day 45. As of 6 months after the surgery, his ADLs have completely improved and he has returned to social life without any intravenous nutritional supports. CONCLUSIONS: Intensive treatment including surgical procedures allowed the patient with SMA occlusion in COVID-19 pneumonia to return to social life with completely independent ADLs. Although treatment for COVID-19 involves many challenges, including securing medical resources and controlling the spread of infection, when severe abdominal pain occurs in patients with COVID-19, physicians should consider SMA occlusion and treat promptly for life-saving from this deadly combination.

ABSTRACT

Background: Extrapulmonary complications of COVID-19 including acute mesenteric ischemia are being increasingly reported and are a reason of poorer clinical outcome and increased inpatient mortality rate. Case: Here, we present a case of a young obese male who developed acute superior mesenteric artery thrombosis as a result of COVID-19. Discussion: Some direct causes of mesenteric thrombosis in COVID-19 patients have been hypothesized. Furthermore, immobilization, endothelial injury, and increased prothrombotic factor production are proven causes of thromboembolism in COVID-19. Conclusion: Early detection and management of acute mesenteric ischemia in COVID-19 cases is crucial to improve the prognosis.

Background: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemia has often oriented the diagnosis of complex pathologies towards CoViD with complications while the main diagnosis could be different. Description of the clinical case: A 76 yo man was hospitalized for confusion and heart failure;in the emergency department, CoViD Ab testing and PCR swab were positive with focal interstitial pneumonia;then splenomegaly, bilateral splenic and renal infarcts and thrombosis of the superior mesenteric artery were confirmed by chest-abdomen CT scan, Doppler US found thrombosis of brachial artery. Antithrombotic therapy was intensified but a new episode of confusion with fever occurred. Brain CT revealed multiple target lesions with hemorrhagic areas, suspected to be neoplastic. LMW heparin was suspended, blood cultures came back positive for Enterococcus faecalis;echocardiography showed a vegetation on the aortic valve;thus the patient's history was reconsidered based on the findings of bacterial endocarditis. When he tested negative, he underwent valve replacement with bioprosthesis. A new positive CoViD swab interrupted the cardiological rehabilitation but finally he was discharged. Conclusions: SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia in this patient was complicated by aortic endocarditis with systemic septic embolization. The antibiotic and steroid therapy administered upon admission may have covered or favored sepsis, that could have been perhaps already onsetting at the time of patient presentation in the ER. The patient's overall hospital stay was 80 days due to recurrent swab positivity even though in the absence of specific symptoms.

ABSTRACT

Thrombotic events are well-recognized complications of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The incidence of such complications is highly related to the severity of COVID-19 pneumonia. Recent evidence suggests that the coagulopathy of COVID-19 may persist for some period even after the full recovery from pneumonia. We report the case of a 35-year-old man who presented with a 10-day history of fever and cough. His plain radiograph showed bilateral peripherally located opacities suggestive of COVID-19. The diagnosis was confirmed by the reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). He was placed on a non-invasive ventilator but it failed to maintain normal oxygen saturation. Hence, the decision for intubation was made. He was extubated after 10 days in the ICU. The patient had a complete recovery. One week after discharge, the patient presented with severe abdominal pain that was out of proportion to the physical examination findings. He had an abdominal CT scan, which demonstrated a large thrombus occluding the superior mesenteric artery. There was no bowel dilatation or focal mural thickening to suggest bowel ischemia. The patient was resuscitated with intravenous fluid hydration. Opioid analgesics were administered to control the pain. After stabilizing the patient, he underwent laparotomy with thrombectomy. The patient tolerated the operation with no complications and had an uneventful recovery. The patient was discharged in good condition with no active issues after four days of hospitalization. The superior mesenteric thrombosis is an unusual complication of COVID-19 pneumonia. This case provides further evidence on the possibility of thrombotic events following the recovery from COVID-19. There is a pressing need for future studies to investigate the role of prophylactic antithrombotic and anticoagulants in patients who recovered from severe COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. The most common symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath (predominantly involving pulmonary function). However, there are lesser-known presentations that affect other systems too. Vascular complications have been reported in the literature focusing on venous thrombosis, which appears to be more common than arterial thrombosis. Among arterial thrombosis, mainly lower limb involvement is reported so far. Here, we report an unusual presentation in COVID-19, which presented with acute abdomen due to superior mesenteric artery thrombosis without respiratory symptoms. We report this case as a varied form of coronavirus complication presentation and highlight the need for eternal vigilance and a reactive approach for early diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

Since the emergence of novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP), a number of reports have pointed out an increased coagulation activity in these patients mostly during acute phase of the disease. We are reporting a case of acute superior mesenteric thrombosis in a 55-year-old man with NCP 1 week after hospital discharge. He returned to the emergency department 7 days later with severe acute abdominal pain and found to have superior mesenteric artery thrombosis. He subsequently underwent emergent exploratory laparotomy, superior mesenteric artery thrombectomy, and bowel resection. Acute arterial thrombosis may occur in the posthospitalization period in patients with NCP.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) commonly present with fever, constitutional symptoms, and respiratory symptoms. However, atypical presentations are also well known. Though isolated mesenteric arterial occlusion associated with COVID-19 has been reported in literature, combined superior mesenteric arterial and venous thrombosis is rare. We report a case of combined superior mesenteric arterial and venous occlusion associated with COVID-19 infection. CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 45-year-old man who was a health care worker who presented to the emergency department with severe abdominal pain. The clinical examination was unremarkable, but imaging revealed acute mesenteric ischemia caused by superior mesenteric artery and superior mesenteric vein occlusion. Imaging of the chest was suggestive of COVID-19 infection, which was later confirmed with reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction of his nasopharyngeal swab. To date, only 1 case of combined superior mesenteric artery and superior mesenteric vein thrombosis caused by COVID-19 has been reported. WHY SHOULD AN EMERGENCY PHYSICIAN BE AWARE OF THIS?: During the COVID-19 pandemic it is important to keep mesenteric ischemia in the differential diagnosis of unexplained abdominal pain. Routinely adding high-resolution computed tomography of the chest to abdominal imaging should be considered in patients with acute abdomen because it can help to identify COVID-19 immediately. © 2020 Elsevier Inc.

ABSTRACT

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in humans is a novel disease that can affect every organ of the body, with life-threatening consequences. Microvascular lesions and thrombosis have been previously reported in the lung, kidney, and brain. We report a case of combined intestinal lesions and Guillain-Barrè Syndrome in a patient suffering from COVID-19 in the absence of clear laboratory predictors of upcoming complications. The patient survived the severe respiratory syndrome but died after virus-related systemic organ failure.
